An evening dress from the 1860s made of silk taffeta. Taffeta was an extremely popular material throughout the 19th century and was used in men and women’s clothing especially skirts and petticoats. It was known as ‘rustling silk’ because of the sound it made when moved and was often bought because of this quality.
